BOGOTA – Colombian President-elect Abelardo De La Espriella announced on Monday that retired Major General Jorge Eduardo Mora will lead the Ministry of Defense in the incoming administration.

Mora, a veteran officer with decades of service, will be tasked with strengthening national security and leading a firm crackdown on illegal armed groups and criminal organizations across the country.

De La Espriella said he will end the current government’s peace negotiations with armed groups and shift to a tougher military strategy. “Security and rule of law will be the foundation of our government,” he stated.

The president-elect emphasized that restoring order in rural areas and protecting citizens will be top priorities. He added that the new defense team will work closely with police and judicial authorities to dismantle criminal networks.

Mora is expected to outline the administration’s security plan in the coming weeks ahead of the January inauguration.
